It was a beautiful day for litter picking. 8 volunteers kindly turned up.
(John, Sue, Joan, Anne, James, Nadir, their daughter, and myself)
Big thank you to everyone. President Jimmy of course was on one of his many jaunts elsewhere! I (Deborah) was left in charge of distributing grabbers and bags, I think I managed ok.
Mark from the Park (owner of cafe by the lake) helped with clearing overflowing bins and put a pot of coffee on for the volunteers.
It was nice that some of the volunteers were thanked by park users and told that their work was appreciated. It certainly makes it worthwhile.
Next Meeting is Sunday 3rd July, 10 am - 11 am, Cafe by the Lake
MEETING
Jimmy and Heather met with the Groups key contact for the Council Sarah Capes, Ranger, Jesmond Dene and the following were agreed:
- The storage hut near the bowling green can be used for the storage of the grabbers, bin bags etc. The hut will have a key code box with a key in outside the hut for easy access. This means that volunteers can work whenever they want. It will be easier for anyone who arrives late or has to leave early.
- The volunteers will be provided with high vis jackets with 'volunteer' on the back so that park users know that we are there in an official capacity
- Gloves will be provided
- Sarah will set up the Group on the on-line enviro call reporting system to make use of the system easier for us to request rubbish collection
- That someone from the group will contact enviro call following each meeting to notify that there is rubbish to be collected. Rubbish should be left at the edge of the fence near the bowling green so that the council van can collect it easily.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO MAINTAIN PARK
Sarah also mentioned that she has recruiting volunteers who are keen to maintain the park. Sarah and the volunteers had done a section of weeding around the lake where weeds are growing high but it is a big job. If anyone wants to volunteer to help maintain the park for gardening and/or weeding purposes please contact Sarah Capes sarah.capes@newcastle.gov.uk 0191 265 0564
